Following the release of information about Japhet Tanganga’s contract in North London, former Spurs scout Bryan King feels the defender’s tenure at Tottenham is coming to an end.
Tanganga’s Tottenham contract is slated to expire this summer, but the club has the option to extend his stay by an additional year. For now, he is playing football on loan with Millwall in the Championship.
The Sunday Mirror (17 March) reports that Tanganga is unsure if the Spurs will exercise that option or allow him to leave for free in July.
Although Tanganga, 24, is now focused on finishing the season strong with the Lions, he is free to explore a pre-contract arrangement with overseas clubs.
And King feels that his time at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is drawing to an end, whether or not Spurs exercise the option included in the center-back’s contract.
“With the center-backs Tottenham has at the club, I can’t see Tanganga getting back into the Tottenham team,” King stated in an exclusive interview with Tottenham News.
“I would be searching for regular first-team football, if I were Tanganga.” In the event that Spurs decide to extend his contract, Millwall may decide to consider taking him on loan once more.
“He’s performed admirably at Millwall; his performances have improved recently after a bit of a slow start.”
He’s playing frequently, therefore I believe a move to the Championship—possibly to a team near the top of the table vying for promotion to the Premier League—might be in his best interests.
“That would enable him to participate in games on a regular basis, and Daniel Levy might obtain compensation for him.”
Levy is put in an intriguing situation where he has to choose whether to prolong a player’s contract for the possibility of being able to move him on, rather than because he wants to keep the player.
Tanganga’s lack of future under Ange Postecoglou appears to be rather evident, and barring a miracle between now and June, it is difficult to think that Tanganga will still be a Spurs player in September.
He will probably be hoping that Spurs allow him to depart on a free agent in order to continue playing football regularly with a different team.
Spurs will now have to choose if it is worth it to extend the contract of their academy graduate.
